1)    Habitat--The place where an animal lives, feeds and reproduces is called its habitat.

2)   Terrestrial animals--Animals that live on the land are called terrestrial animals.e.g lion, deer

3)   Aquatic animals--Animals that live in water are called aquatic animals.e.g fishes, crabs

4)    Amphibians--Some animals can live on land and in water, both. These animals are called amphibians. Frogs and salamanders are amphibians.

5)   Arboreal animlas—Terrestrial animals that spend most of their time on trees are called arboreal animals. Monkeys and chameleons are arboreal animals.

6)   Aerial animals--Animals that can fly are called aerial animals. Birds and bats are aerial animals.

7)   Adaptation--Adaptation is the process of changing one’s body features or eating and living habits to adjust to the environment.

     8 )Camouflaging— Animals blend with their environment when they have       the same body color or pattern as their surroundings. This is called camouflaging and it keeps them safe against predators. Polar bears and camels camouflage with their habitats.

 9) Migration--Some animals and birds migrate or move in groups from one place to another seasonally. They travel long distances to avoid extreme weather conditions or in search of favorable food and breeding grounds.
For example- in winters, Siberian cranes migrate to India from Russia.

10) Hibernation-- During hibernation, these animals sleep in their burrows and caves through the winter months. This helps them save energy and keeps their bodies warm.

11) Echolocation-- The method by which animals locate objects by listening to echoes is known as echolocation. Dolphins and bats use echolocation for movement and communication.

12) Nocturnal animals--Animals which are active during the night than day are called nocturnal animals



Q.2 Why do animals animals show locomotion or movement?
Ans. Animals need to keep moving from one place to another in search of food, water, shelter and to also protect themselves from predators.

Q.3 Write the function of the following body covering

·        Scales- Fish and reptiles have scales on their bodies, which prevent water from entering.
·        Shell- It is a hard outer covering that protects the soft bodies of animals such as snails and tortoises.
·        Fur and wool- It is a thick outer covering that protects animals like sheep and the Arctic Fox from extreme cold and gives them warmth.
·        Feathers- They are light in weight and help the birds to fly and keep their body warm. These colorful feathers also help in camouflaging, mating and defence.

Q.4 Write the breathing adaptations of fishes, frogs and insects.
Ans. In aquatic habitats, gills help blood absorb the oxygen present in water.
Frogs breathe through lungs when on land and through their skin when in water.
Insects have small air holes called spiracles which lead to a network of tubes called trachea that help in breathing. Birds have air sacs and lungs for breathing.
