NEW TERMS

1. axle – a metal rod connected to the centre of a circular object which causes it to spin

2. intersect – crossing of two or more lines at a certain point

Answer the following questions.

a. What are longitudes?

ANS. The imaginary lines which run vertically from North Pole to South Pole on the globe are called longitudes. They are semicircles that meet one another at the poles.

b. What are latitudes?

ANS. The imaginary lines that run horizontally on the globe are called latitudes. The earth is spherical in shape so these lines encircle the earth in a circular form.

c. What are the important features of latitudes?

ANS. Some of the important features of the latitudes are:

● Latitudes run parallel to the equator and also to each other; they have equal distances between them. Therefore, they are also called as parallels of latitudes.

● All the latitudes are measured in degrees (°). In all, there are 181 latitudes on the earth including the equator, 90 in the Northern Hemisphere and 90 in the Southern Hemisphere.

● The lengths of latitudes decrease from the equator to the pole.

d. What is the geographical grid?

ANS. The latitudes and longitudes intersect each other to form a network of lines called grid on the globe.

e. State any two points of differences between latitudes and longitudes.

ANS. LATITUDES

1. In all, there are 181 latitudes on the earth including the equator, 90 in the Northern Hemisphere and 90 in the Southern Hemisphere

2. The lengths of latitudes decrease from the equator to the pole.

LONGITUDES

1.In all, there are 360 meridians on the globe, 180 meridians to the East and 180 meridians to the West of the Prime Meridian.

2. The length of the longitudes remains the same from the North to the South Pole.

f. What are the coordinates of a place?

ANS. The point at which latitude and a longitude meet are called its coordinates.

HOTS

Natural calamities like floods, hurricanes and earthquakes cause damage and destruction to the places where it occurs. How do you think the pilots and the armies locate these places and carry out their rescue operations?
