Q.1. Write two important adaptations of:
a. Hippopotamus --
● they have a large deposits of fat under their
skin that allows them to stay afloat in water;
● as they spend a lot of time underwater, their
sense organs like the eyes, ears and nostrils
are positioned high on their head so that
they can breathe and smell above the water
surface while the rest of their body is submerged in water
b. Elephant --
● wrinkled skin and large ears that help them
to keep themselves cool. They flap their
huge ears to keep cool;
● They have a special structure called trunk
that helps in pulling down tree branches to
eat, to spray water and dust the skin.
c. Cheetah --
● Cheetahs have powerful legs and a
streamlined body that helps them to run fast.
● To run fast, they require large quantities of
oxygen for which they have a wide nasal
passages and big hearts and lungs.
d. Polar Bear --
- the white and snowy appearance helps them camouflage them from prey on the snow and ice
- they have a thick layer of fat under their skin and fur on their body which protects them from cold.
Q.2 EXPLAIN THE TERMS
1.Camouflaging- Animals blend with their environment when
they have the same body color or pattern as
their surroundings. This is called camouflaging
and it keeps them safe against predators.
2. Habitat- The place where an animal lives, feeds and reproduces is called its habitat.
HOTS
a. The light brown colour of the lion camouflages it in the
grasslands. Why does the lion require camouflage?
ANS. This helps them to catch the prey.
b. Bats have very poor eyesight while hawks and eagles have very sharp
eyesight. Why?
ANS. Hawk and Eagles have sharp eyesight because they spot their prey from a great height.
Bats locate nearby objects and their prey by emitting high pitched sounds and listening to the resultant echoes. Therefore they have poor eyesight.
