Q. Differentiate between voluntary and involuntary muscles.

ANS. Voluntary Muscles --

  • These are muscles under our direct control.
  • Voluntary muscles bring about the movement of bones.
  • They have a striped or striated appearance and are also called skeletal muscles.
  • Muscles in the arms, legs, hands and feet are voluntary muscles.

  • Involuntary Muscles --
  •
  • These are muscles that are not under our direct control.
  • Involuntary muscles control movement in the alimentary canal, flow of blood in the blood vessels, etc.
  • Voluntary muscles do not have striations hence they are also called smooth muscles.
  • Involuntary muscles do not have striations.

Answer the following questions in 3 to 5 sentences.

a. Describe any two types of joints.

ANS. Hinge Joint A hinge joint allows back and forth movement only in one plane such as the hinges of a door. The bones of the knee, elbow, fingers and toes have hinge joints.

Pivot Joint A pivot joint allows movement that is up, down and sideways. It is found between the skull and the first two vertebrae of the backbone. It allows the head to move up, down, and sideways.

b. Name the food items that should be added to the diet to make the bones stronger.

ANS. The food items that should be added to the diet to make the bones stronger are:

  • Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt.
  • Leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, and collard greens.
  • Bony fish like sardines.
  • Tofu.
  • Soybeans.
  • Nuts like almonds and walnuts.

c. Explain the structure of the bone.

ANS. The outer surface of the bone is hard and strong and the inside is soft and spongy.

The middle portion of some bones is filled with a soft fatty material called bone marrow.

Red and white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow.

Blood vessels pass through the bones and provide nourishment to them.

d. Explain the structures of the pelvic and pectoral girdles.

ANS. There are two types of girdles in our body, pectoral girdle (shoulder) and pelvic girdle (hip). The girdles help to join the limb directly to the vertebral column.

They are fixed to the vertebral column and lie on both its sides.

The pectoral girdle is made of the shoulder plate and collar bone.

The pelvic girdle is made of three bones which are fused together to form a single bone.

HOTS

Why does a doctor put a cast when a bone gets fractured?

ANS. Casts and splints support and protect injured bones and soft tissue. When you break a bone, your doctor will put the pieces back together in the right position. Casts and splints hold the bones in place while they heal. They also reduce pain, swelling, and muscle spasm.
